Fertilizing Maples
The best fertilizer for Maples is one that has a balanced mix of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus (N,P,K). Spring time is the best time to apply this fertilize as the tree is just getting ready to need all those goodies to help it grow strong.
What does the N, P, K do for the tree?
Nitrogen promotes healthy leaf growth. Potassium enhances disease resistance and strong root development. Phosphorus promotes good root growth.
When you receive your tree, it will already have received this fertilizer. Compost, Bone meal and fish emulsion products are all great additions for the tree as well.
Pruning Maples: It is best to prune your maples during late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant. The focus is trimming those dead or damaged branches out.
Post Planting Care
We recommend mulch around each tree to help keep the moisture in. We also recommend watering each tree ONE time a week, no more than that, unless we receive measurable amounts of rain.
Be aware that Maple trees can suffer from sun scald. This happens when the plant is warmed too quickly in the early spring, and the inside of the tree is still frozen/dormant in winter. To avoid this, you can wrap the trees in a tree guard or a paper wrap but ultimately mother nature holds the cards. Majority of the time the tree will heal up on its own okay and the bark will grow around the scaring. If you have questions, please reach out. Please note this is not included in the warranty of the tree, it is not something we can control.
